7 Simple and Effective Growth Marketing Tactics for SMEs!

Are you an SME owner or a solopreneur feeling frustrated by the stagnation of your business growth? It's a common challenge to exhaust your existing marketing strategies and hesitate to invest more in advertising or outsourced services.

That's why I've written this blog – to share simple and effective growth marketing tactics for SMEs that I've personally used to propel my own business forward. These tried-and-tested methods can be applied to any business, provided that you, as the owner, are willing to put in the necessary work. So, let's dive in!

i) Referral as a Growth Marketing Tactic for SMEs

When it comes to referrals, it's time to break away from the conventional methods you can easily find online. As someone who doesn't operate in the FMCG/MLM industry, I believe referral programs shouldn't rely solely on promotional codes and discounts. Instead, referrals should stem from genuine belief that you are the best provider for someone's friend or acquaintance.

Elevate Existing Clients

Rather than implementing a referral program, put your existing clients on a pedestal by sharing and showcasing them on your distribution channels. This approach is especially effective for service providers. Create testimonial posts that feature the faces of your clients and highlight what they have to say about your service. Not only does this build trust with potential leads, but it also demonstrates how much you value your clients. Tag them in your posts, proudly display their testimonials on your website, and make it evident that you appreciate their feedback.

Authenticity Over Codes

Making your existing clients feel seen and valued is far more important than simply throwing them a referral code and expecting them to do the work for you. By focusing on authentic connections and highlighting the positive experiences of your clients, you establish a genuine foundation for referrals. When clients genuinely believe in your services, they will naturally become advocates who refer others without the need for incentives.

ii) Email marketing

Many companies utilize email marketing as a means to send out promotional messages. However, in my experience, that approach rarely succeeds. Instead, you're likely to witness a decline in open rates and an increase in unsubscribers. This occurs because if a customer in your database intends to make a repurchase, they will do so without any additional disruptive nudges. In fact, such nudges may push them towards seeking out a competitor offering an even lower price.

Building lasting relationships

Therefore, email marketing proves effective as a growth tactic only when employed as a gentle reminder to your customers that you're still there for them. Its true potential lies in its ability to position your business as the top-of-mind choice. I've personally experienced marketing qualified leads reaching out to me because they've noticed the consistent effort I've put into my emails, which demonstrates that I'm a valuable attention-worthy individual.

Serving, not asking

EDMs have allowed me to initiate subscribers to take action.

While online marketing may appear to be an easier way to reach people compared to manual offline methods, the fundamental principle remains the same: focus on serving your audience rather than solely seeking something in return. This approach is what enables you to effectively utilize the channel and foster business growth.

iii) Networking

Happy hours and dinners are much better networking settings than conference halls.

When it comes to networking events, it's time to shift our focus from quantity to quality. Simply aiming to distribute as many name cards as possible won't yield the desired results. Attending events that encourage such a competitive approach to connection-building often leads to minimal returns on your efforts. In this section, we'll explore a more effective networking strategy that revolves around identifying your niche, seeking intimate settings, and nurturing valuable conversations.

Targeted Networking

Instead of attending every networking event, be selective and choose those that attract individuals relevant to your niche. Look for events that specifically cater to your target audience. By focusing on a more specialized pool of attendees, you increase the chances of forming meaningful connections with people who align with your business goals.

Quality Conversations

While it's important to make the most of your time and engage with a variety of individuals, prioritize building valuable conversations. Seek out those who show genuine interest in your services, even if they may not appear to be potential leads initially. By investing in meaningful interactions, you leave a lasting impression. This increases the likelihood of receiving referrals from individuals who recognize the value you provide and can connect you with potential leads.

Depth over Quantity

I welcome virtual and offline coffee sessions too.

Don't be discouraged if you end up having in-depth conversations with only a few people at networking events. It's not uncommon to connect deeply with just a handful of individuals. Remember, it's about the quality of the connections, not the quantity. By investing time and effort into these meaningful conversations, you increase your chances of receiving referrals from these individuals within a relatively short period.

iv) SEO

When it comes to SEO as a growth marketing tactic, it's essential to shift the focus from keyword stuffing and excessive blogging. Instead, SEO should revolve around treating your website with the attention it deserves. Is your website merely a URL redirect, or have you properly optimized it for exploration, providing valuable content that resonates with your target audience? In this section, we'll delve into the importance of optimizing your website for engagement through effective SEO strategies.

Beyond Landing Pages

Simply driving traffic to your website is not enough. Anyone can achieve that through paid advertising. The true challenge lies in creating an engaging user experience that encourages visitors to explore further and willingly navigate through your conversion funnel. To achieve this, your content should be optimized for SEO, both in terms of written content and visual elements such as images.

Website Memorability

A well-structured and informative website has a higher chance of being remembered compared to a single social media post, regardless of its virality. Engaging with a website involves navigating through various pages, providing ample opportunities to host valuable information and leave a lasting impression. Test yourself: can you recall the person or brand behind the last social media post you liked? Now, compare that to the last website you visited and spent more than a minute on. The latter is more likely to be remembered due to the depth of engagement it offers.

v) Personal branding

My client is attracted by my personal branding.

One of the key reasons personal branding is effective is because people inherently trust individuals more than they trust a product. Establishing trust with your audience makes it easier to capture their attention and generate interest. While product-focused content marketing has its merits, personal branding offers a distinct advantage by fostering relationships with your audience. In this section, we'll explore the impact of personal branding and how it can enhance your growth tactics.

Trust and Connection

Personal branding allows you to build trust by showcasing your personality, expertise, and values. By creating an authentic connection with your audience, you can establish a foundation of trust that goes beyond promoting your products. People are more likely to engage and show interest in something when they trust the person behind it. Personal branding provides an opportunity to cultivate that trust and make deeper connections.

Faceless Personal Branding

Contrary to popular belief, personal branding doesn't always require showing your face. As an example, on my other business's social media account, I don't reveal my identity, yet people recognize me as the "owner" based on my tone, manner, and distinct content style. They feel a personal connection with me, leading them to follow, comment, and even recall specific posts while making a purchase. Personal branding transcends physical appearance and focuses on building a genuine connection with your target audience.

Overcoming Professionalism Concerns

Some business owners hesitate to introduce a "persona" or character into their marketing messages, fearing it may appear unprofessional. However, personal branding remains one of the most potent growth tactics for any business. It doesn't require compromising professionalism; instead, it allows you to showcase your expertise and unique qualities, making your brand more relatable and memorable. Even developing a mascot can leverage the power of personal branding and forge stronger connections with your audience.

vi) Conversion Rate Optimization

Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggle to achieve significant business growth because they lack awareness of the key drivers behind their success. Caught up in day-to-day tasks, they fail to assess what truly works for their business. This leads to either doing everything haphazardly or remaining stagnant, assuming their business is fine. However, without understanding their numbers or having a gauge for success, they unintentionally create barriers to further growth. In this section, we'll explore the importance of conversion rate optimization (CRO) in unlocking a business's growth potential.

Knowing Your Numbers

To drive effective growth, it's crucial to understand the factors that contribute most to your business's success. Many SMEs neglect this aspect as they get caught up in daily operations. By not taking the time to assess and measure what truly works, they hinder their potential for growth. Without a clear understanding of key metrics and what drives success, it becomes challenging to optimize strategies and capitalize on growth opportunities.

Diversify Lead Acquisition Channels

Heavy reliance on referrals can be a risky approach for SMEs and service providers. Just as investors advise diversifying portfolios, businesses need multiple lead acquisition channels to foster growth. By creating several funnels fueled by different actions, companies can accurately assess conversion rates from various sources. This allows them to identify the most effective channels and optimize them for maximum results.

Striving for Continuous Improvement

Settling for "okay" is not enough. There is always room for improvement, and it's the responsibility of business owners to roll up their sleeves and thoroughly analyze their operations. By conducting a deep dive into their businesses, owners can identify weaknesses, leverage strengths, and uncover untapped potential. This proactive approach to understanding their business's dynamics enables them to make informed decisions and optimize strategies for growth.

vii) Educational collaborations

In the realm of business growth strategies, one often overlooked but highly effective approach is engaging in educational collaborations. By interacting with others and providing valuable education, whether through talks, online tutorials, or mentoring programs, you can foster business growth in multiple ways. This section explores the benefits of educational collaborations, including expanding your network, gaining marketing insights, accessing young audiences, and establishing strategic alliances.

Networking and Referrals

When you engage in educational collaborations, you create new channels to connect with others, leaving a lasting impression that can lead to potential referrals. Hosting talks, sharing expertise through online tutorials, or collaborating with educational organizations allows you to showcase your knowledge and expertise to a broader audience. This exposure can generate valuable referrals and increase your business's visibility.

Learning from Others

Engaging in educational collaborations also provides an opportunity to learn from others. By interacting with educational organizations, mentors, or students, you gain insights into different marketing strategies and approaches. These insights can be leveraged to enhance your own business practices and drive further growth.

Accessing Young Audiences

Educational collaborations grant you access to young audiences, offering valuable insights into their behaviors, preferences, and trends. By engaging with them, you not only gain a deeper understanding of their needs but also have the opportunity to acquire their skills and knowledge through internship programs. This synergy between your business and young talent can fuel innovation and fresh perspectives.

Strategic Alliances

Collaborating with other organizations and individuals through educational initiatives opens the door to strategic alliances. By exploring creative ways to partner with complementary businesses, you can leverage each other's resources, manpower, and expertise to drive mutual growth. This can include trading services, sponsoring initiatives, or finding other mutually beneficial arrangements.
